The above wild turkey (photographed last weekend) has daylight on his brain. Sort of. Sex on his mind? Well, kinda. It all starts, however, with sunlight. No, not in terms of biological evolution, but in terms of strutting-your-stuff behavior. Mating displays. Increased daylight hours triggers the pineal gland of the brain, testosterone levels surge and . . . . Tom the turkey is showing off not his biceps, his "guns," but his glorious tail fan and skin coloration.

Sizing the Monsters of the St. John’s River

We see plenty of alligators when boating in the nearby waters of the St. John's River system. When you see a really big gator out of the water, you can't help but think, "What a monster!"

The above is a little one. I don't know, maybe 4 & 1/2 feet.

When we spot them, most of the time alligators are at least partly submerged. Very frequently only their eyes and nostrils protrude above the surface of the water. Imagine flooding the picture above until that happened ... just two sets of bumps sticking above the water. When only those parts of the alligator can be seen, the creatures don't look all that big. But the proportion of the eye to snout tip length to the overall body length is quite small. That is why when we see just the snout of a gator, but the eye-to-nostril distance is "merely" as long as a human forearm . . . our hearts will quicken. Now that's a hidden monster!
