The sun is nearly overhead. If I were a little further north in this country (Australia – I’m in Melbourne) it would be directly overhead.

Peter — Cool! Nice to receive word from the other side of the world.
While I’ve known that Australians celebrate Christmas during their summer, I have some questions about it. Maybe you could answer them for me.
First, is it a big holiday there? As in national holiday with big news and widespread sales events every year?
Are Christmas scenes and decorations winter-themed?
Lastly, do Australians mark/celebrate their winter solstice in June in any way?

Yes, it’s a big holiday here. As it’s around the start of summer most people are on vacation and quite a lot go to beach resorts, towns and so on. Seafood is big these days for Christmas lunch/dinner. There’s still the roast turkey, chicken, ham and so on as well. Many people go to the beach in the afternoon. As it’s early in the summer it’s not usually excessively hot. It was 25 (that’s 77 in American money) where I was (yesterday, however, it was 41, that’s 106).
Christmas is a big commercial event that starts even earlier than yours (we don’t have Thanksgiving to get in the way of these things). There are lots of snow-themed decorations etc. I often feel sorry for the poor Santas dressed in their fineries.
Oh, there’s a traditional of huge sales the day after Christmas. People flock to them, why I don’t know. I would have thought they’d had enough of shopping by then.
There are a few people who do a Christmas in June/July but it’s not common, it’s merely an excuse to get together and dig out some excellent wines (as if I need an excuse for that).
