While I stop far short of believing that trees have rights, I do recognize that trees have value — alive.
What is that value? Beauty, shade, CO2 absorption, shelter and food for other forms of life. To name a few.
We have a sickly oak in our side yard. Within topple distance of the roof. I hate to do it, but I’m going to have that tree cut down. At least most of it. Before any hurricane winds swing our way.
The red-shoulder hawks will miss the fantastic views afforded by its 70 foot-tall, nearly bare branches. And we will miss what little shade some of its branches did provide. Oh well. Other juvenile trees eagerly await access to the direct sunlight (anthropomorphizing just a little).
What can you do . . . it’s the cycle of life.
