Much of the research in herbal medicine is done in Germany simply because they choose to fund it. What generally makes a compound “complimentary medicine” is that it is an herb or other plant or mineral that can be effective when consumed as it exists in nature, without being synthesized by man. Sort of the difference between “organic” and regular farming. As to St. John’s Wort, it works well for mild depression but is not effective for severe depression. Some of that research has been done in the UK and US.
