There isn’t a symmetry between the position of atheists and believers as you seem to argue. There is no contrast between atheists and believers.
The negation of one isn’t the affirmation of the other. We can’t say “stop believing will make you an atheist” because the believer isn’t concerned with the propositions that concern the atheist.
The atheist is concerned with the propositions “there is a god”, “there isn’t a god.” The believer doesn’t argue for either.
A believer holds to an insight or intuition of god, and so is not concerned with physically evidenced propositions such as “there is a god”, “there isn’t a god.”
You can be an atheist and a believer. An atheist subscribes to the certainties of physical evidence. So does a believer.
I’m not sure how or why you make them appear as a privileged binary. Mind you, just like atheists, creationists also make atheism and christianity a privileged binary.

John –
“… The atheist is concerned with the propositions “there is a god”, “there isn’t a god.” The believer doesn’t argue for either…”
The believer doesn’t argue ‘there is a god.” Are you kidding?
And while it is true that belief and lack of belief are not binary opposites, privileged or not, in terms of social and political realities, sometimes they indeed are.
“…You can be an atheist and a believer….”
Not a believer in a god. Not unless you engage in an extreme abuse of language and logic.

If theists were content to practice their delusions without forcing them on others by passing them into law, there would be no problem. But instead, they insist upon brainwashing the children of everyone by teaching such things as creationism and voting laws into effect that promote their distorted world view.
If there is a problem, it is due to religion, not atheism.

James – exactly. If religion were a personal, private matter, atheists would pretty much disappear from the scene. Though still exist.
