I think you make a great point here. Environmentalism is often promoted as though it’s about not affecting the environment, but in reality that’s virtually impossible. It’s hard to think of a species alive that has no impact whatsoever on the planet — that’s the point of the concept of an ecosystem. Every species consumes resources and outputs some kind of waste. The real key seems to be managing that consumption and waste output at reasonable (“sustainable”) levels. It’s unrealistic and unfair to suppose that humans aren’t allowed to use any resources. But the real question then becomes: how much should we be allowed to use? “Some, but not too much” is not a clear enough principle to live by.
