We’ve got slim pickings for the 54th edition of the Humanist Symposium. Part of that is my fault — I forgot to announce its coming in advance. Oops. Bad Andrew, bad, bad . . . . but wait a minute, I’m a humanist. I can forgive myself, can’t I?
Slim pickings aside, the carnival will go on. (How long is up to you and me and others.)
Although it is hardly necessary now for organizational purposes, I had planned to arrange the posts by the humanist values they reflect (at least in part). And for this batch of posts, I came up with three. Following the category description you will find the source of the post coupled with a brief pull quote. Enjoy!
Humanist Values
REASON/RATIONALITY
- Tech Skeptic at Effort Sisyphus — Skepticism and the closed mind
From my experience, if someone tells you that you are being closed minded, you are probably coming off that way. Step back, ask some questions based on your knowledge, or delineate how you came to your conclusions.
- PhillyChief at YOU MADE ME SAY IT — Atheist Worldview? –
Is the rejection of god claims alone enough to constitute an “overall perspective from which one sees and interprets the world?”
EMPATHY/COMPASSION FOR OTHERS
Andrew at 360 Degree Skeptic: — Dissolve In Peace
With humans, and perhaps beloved pets (living beings we had relationships with and wish that their being continued in some form, so as to maintain the relationship?) we wish for them to R.I.P.
FREE SPEECH
NFQ at No Forbidden Questions — Let’s make some noise
I have a relatively short commute, but I easily pass plenty of religious advertisements every day. These are billboards, ads in and on buses and in bus stop shelters, and proclamations from the streetside marquees of the eight or so churches I go by. They tell me that I can find happiness and fulfillment by attending that church or the other one, they tell me to visit such-and-such website to read about divine revelations, they tell me that Jesus loves me.
Cubik’s Rube at same — Danny Dyer may or may not be a cunt
And at that point, Danny Dyer can fuck right off and go to hell. . . . I’m just looking at this ethically. And from a moral standpoint, whoever wrote that piece of advice and decided to publish it in a magazine is a total cunt.

I bet that last one caught your attention!
Well, that’s it for HS 54. Submit here to set #55 on a bigger course.
