In our front yard pear tree we’ve got a vacant nest. It’s a bit of a fixer-upper, but I think it could make a good home. And I’d love to see birds flying in and out of that tree, raising a family.

What kind of birds might move in? First of all, the nest has to be the right fit. Judging by the size, I’d say something in the cardinal to mockingbird range.

But I’m doubtful if will be re-used. Few birds move into already constructed nests. It seems their courtship and nesting behavior is a script that begins with twig collection and basic construction first. And so that’s where they instinctively begin.

Too bad. The nest had a good amount of privacy, access to great insect-hunting grounds, and few hawks prowling the area.

Best of all, selfishly, I could watch the goings on from the comfort of my living room couch. Now that’s bird-watching at its laziest.
