This weekend I’m going to move a young cypress tree from one area of our property to another. Why this weekend? Google told me to. Well, not Google itself, but the search results I found. It’s the perfect time for it. Early spring, before the new cypress growth starts pushing out.

In another time I would have consulted the village elder with my question. But in our time perhaps the village elder is just as likely to be the village idiot as he/she is to be a source of knowledge. At least in terms of some specific, specialized bit of information.

Is Google putting grandparents out of business? In a small way, maybe. Grand-daughter cooks can find recipes galore online. And grandma’s may have a bit too much saturated fat in it anyway.

Will Google every introduce G-sitter for watching the kids? Then what will the role of grandparents consist of? Actually, this is a serious question. Ageism is a problem. And part of the problem is that seniors lack valued roles in today’s world.

Mine are no longer, so helping me with yardwork wouldn’t be an option. What else could they do?
