We have a number of holly trees on or adjacent to our property. They survived our winter of many frosts and even a few deep freezes — unusual for central Florida — quite nicely. Are they native?

Some species, yes. Such as the tree species photographed above. Notice the small serrations/pre-needles on the leaves.

Other species are not. I have suspicions about the one growing in our front yard. I will say this, that plant is an absolute “smother-stucker” to prune. Damn that thing! Long spines that rip into your skin and draw blood quicker than you can say, NURSE!

Interestingly, the etymology of “holly” traces back to a word for . . . “to prick.”

Makes sense.
